''Lowestoft Chronicle'' is an online magazine that publishes short stories, flash fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, interviews, and artwork. It is published on a quarterly basis and an anthology of the best work is published annually. Preference is given to humorous submissions with an emphasis on travel.
== History ==
The magazine was founded in 2009 by Nicholas Litchfield, a librarian, researcher, and author who spent several years in East Anglia and fell in love with the Suffolk seaside town's solitude and softest sand.〔Norfolk, Pam. ("Book review: Intrepid Travelers: Lowestoft Chronicle’s 2013 Anthology Edited by Nicholas Litchfield" ). ''The Lancashire Evening Post'', May 30, 2013.〕〔Litchfield, Nicholas. "Five Favorite Books Themed Around Humorous Journeys, by Nicholas Litchfield". ''Examiner.com'', October 23, 2013.〕〔Litchfield, Nicholas. "Five Favorite Railroad Books, by Nicholas Litchfield." ''Examiner.com'', March 14, 2014.〕〔Norfolk, Pam. ("Book Review – Swampjack Virus by Nicholas Litchfield" ). ''The Lancashire Evening Post'', October 22, 2013.〕 It was the town's historic lack of notable writers or periodicals that prompted him to launch ''Lowestoft Chronicle'', providing the UK's most easterly point with its first literary magazine.〔Norfolk, Pam. ("Book review: Intrepid Travelers: Lowestoft Chronicle’s 2013 Anthology Edited by Nicholas Litchfield" ). ''Blackpool Gazette'', May 30, 2013.〕 The editors' mission is to “form a global ‘think tank’ of inquisitive, worldly scribblers, collectively striving towards excellence and, if possible, world domination.”〔''Duotrope's Digest''. ("Publication Details: Lowestoft Chronicle" ), September 21, 2009.〕 Cheryl LaGuardia of the ''Library Journal'' wrote of the magazine: “All things considered, it might just be a very good thing if the ''Lowestoft Chronicle'' were to achieve their goal of world domination.”〔LaGuardia, Cheryl. ("The Lowestoft Chronicle" ) ''Library Journal'', February 22, 2011.〕
The magazine has received positive reviews from numerous well-known authors, including Jay Parini, James Reasoner,〔Reasoner, James. ("Intrepid Travelers - Nicholas Litchfield, ed." ) ''Rough Edges'', August 12, 2013.〕〔Reasoner, James. () ''Rough Edges'', March 12, 2014.〕〔Reasoner, James. () ''Rough Edges'', July 16, 2015.〕 Sheldon Russell, and acclaimed travel writer Tony Perrottet. Franz Wisner, ''New York Times'' bestselling author of ''Honeymoon with My Brother'', remarked: "A tip of the hat (sombrero, fez) to ''Lowestoft Chronicle'' for fueling our urge to turn off Jersey Shore, toss our cell phones into a lake, and go embrace this amazing planet of ours. Bon Voyage!"〔Lowestoft Chronicle. ("Reviews of Lowestoft Chronicle" ), September 1, 2011.〕
The magazine has also received positive reviews from the Austrian national radio station FM4〔Dempsey, Dave. ("Today’s Webtip: The Lowestoft Chronicle." ), FM4, September 2, 2013.〕 and the literary journal review website ''The Review Review'', which described ''Lowestoft Chronicle'' in a five star review as "full of great talent and exceptionally well-written pieces"〔Smith, Tara. ("A Journal Flies High With Humor, Travel, and Flash Fiction" ) ''The Review Review'', June 25, 2012.〕 NewPages.com, an independent publishing review website, wrote of the magazine: "''Lowestoft Chronicle'' presents entertaining and exciting stories that lend themselves toward travel without dipping completely over into travel writing."〔''NewPages.com''. ("Screen Reading October 2012" ), October 1, 2012.〕 Praising ''Lowestoft Chronicle'' for its layout, artwork, poetry, and fiction, it noted: "Many of the works take one to far-away and exotic places."〔''NewPages.com''. ("Literary & Alternative Magazine Reviews: 15 September 2011" ), September 15, 2011.〕
The magazine also publishes a notable print anthology series. Celebrated novelist Luke Rhinehart, author of the 1971 cult classic book ''The Dice Man'', touted their first anthology as an impetus for inspiring him to want to write short stories again.〔ELITMAG Review. ("Lowestoft Chronicle" ), June 25, 2011.〕 In ''Examiner.com'', Mary Beth Magee praised the variety and quality of the writing in ''Lowestoft Chronicles 2015 anthology ''Other Places''〔Magee, Mary Beth. "Travel topics abound in Lowestoft Chronicle anthology Other Places" ''Examiner.com'', July 10, 2015.〕 and Frank Mundo, ''LA Books Examiner'', said of their 2013 anthology, ''Intrepid Travelers'': "Without a single stinker or filler piece in the bunch, this wonderful 160-page 'little' anthology definitely bids well for the strength of work the online magazine version must regularly publish.”〔Mundo, Frank. "Book Review: Intrepid Travelers edited by Nicholas Litchfield" ''Examiner.com'', July 21, 2013.〕 The English daily tabloid newspaper, the ''Lancashire Evening Post'', called ''Intrepid Travelers'' “a coruscating cornucopia of humour, drama and big, beautiful adventures”,〔''Lancashire Evening Post''. ("Book review: Intrepid Travelers: Lowestoft Chronicle’s 2013 Anthology Edited by Nicholas Litchfield" ), May 30, 2013〕 and ''Other Places'' “a mouth-watering feast”, noting: "Packed into the pages are stories to entice, enthral, and entertain...incisive and enlightening interviews...and a tasty blend of pleasing and deftly prepared poems."〔''Lancashire Evening Post''. ("Book review: Other Places by Edited by Nicholas Litchfield" ), July 2, 2015.〕
